St Joseph's Neighbourhood Centre

St Joseph's Neighbourhood Centre

The St Joseph’s Neighbourhood Centre is housed in the old St Joseph’s Primary School - a listed building which is now over 100 years old. Since the school moved to Halyrude, Old Church Road in 1974, no major structural work was carried out – only emergency patch repairs – until a Management Committee was formed in 1997. The whole building was in need of extensive (and expensive) renovation and repair to make it fit for the new millennium.

In 2000, the Management Committee secured a lease from the Parish and set to tackling the major problems. These included a new roof, central heating, double glazed windows and the construction of an extension to house the kitchen, new toilet facilities and an entrance from the resurfaced car park

All of this refurbishment was achieved by hard work, local fundraising and success in securing grants from various sources including the National Lottery.

Since 1997, the Management Committee has striven to increase the use of the premises from 2 user groups to many regular groups and frequent casual use for parties, workshops, demonstrations, meetings etc. This gives us a regular income and allows us to maintain the premises to a high standard.
