How can I join as a member to help others ?
Local area Co-ordinators are always delighted to receive enquiries from potential new members. Many recruits are introduced by word-of-mouth through existing members. There is no joining or membership fee, but members are asked to give an annual commitment of 100 hours (around two hours per week) to the programme. A new member is asked to complete a Registration form (click here to download registration form) indicating the type of assignment he/she is willing to undertake and the geographical area able to be covered. This form, together with a CV, is sent to the area Co-ordinator who will then arrange to meet with the recruit to talk through the programme and try to identify projects that could be of interest. This personal contact between the member and local Co-ordinator is a vital element of the Programme. Once an assignment has been agreed and started, the Co-ordinator continues to keep in touch by phone or email to provide support. Contact is also maintained by means of regular Group meetings where members come together to exchange views and learn about developments within the Scottish Business in the Community network. In the Borders these meetings are usually half-yearly with Scottish Business in the Community providing a light lunch at the conclusion. Enquiries from client groups seeking assistance are either circulated to all members by the local Co-ordinator or, where a specific skill match is identified, can be directed to an individual. The acceptance or refusal of assignments is entirely in the hands of the volunteer.
