Birgham Village News - December 2009 (Hard copies of this Newsletter are Printed by courtesy of Hastings & Co)
CHRISTMAS CAROL EVENING
Christmas Carols will take place in the village hall on Sunday, 20th December at 6.30 pm.
There will be the usual singing followed by mulled wine and mince pies.
Santa would like to invite all the primary school children in the village to come along to meet him there.
A lovely way to start off the Christmas week and everyone is welcome. Please come along and join in.
NEW YEAR’S DAY DIP
Alan and Gordon gracefully retired from the New Years’ Day dip in the Tweed after doing it since the millennium. Since they have hung up their tankinis, it is now up to others to continue this fine and foolhardy tradition ….. please let Alan know if you would be interested (tel 830626) and, if so, we will gladly come to support you.
Also the cycling club from Coldstream may well be interested in boosting numbers too.
The Fisherman’s Arms
The Fisherman’s Arms will celebrate its 1st birthday this weekend. To mark the occasion, Pauline and Steve are going to hold a “birthday bash” at the pub on Sunday, 6th December from 6.30 pm. All villagers and friends are welcome but please bring a dish to share, which could be anything from sausage rolls to mince pies!
The pub will be open on Christmas Eve as normal but will be closed on Christmas Day, opening on Boxing Day again.
Hogmanay
The pub will be open on Hogmanay. If you would like a meal, please phone to book as soon as possible as the numbers are filling up! Tel. 830230 for further details.

FINDING A VILLAGE VOICE
Birgham's answer to THE CHOIR is happening on Sunday 6th December, 1.30 – 5.00 pm.
Sandra Kerr who is a Folk Singer and Lecturer at Newcastle University as well as being the voice behind BAGPUSS is going to lead a singing workshop at Birgham Village Hall, from 1.30 -5.00pm. The cost will depend on how many are interested, but shouldn't be more than £10-£15 and could be cheaper if numbers are good.
If this interests you please let Gordon know as soon as possible either on 01890 830621 or by e-mail gordon@dalvanie.co.uk. You do not need to have a great voice to come along and enjoy this!!
Coldstream Guard Boxes
Alastair and Carol would like to thank everyone very much who donated supplies for the gift boxes for the guards. It was a brilliant response and much appreciated.
Thanks to Alistair, Dave, Harry and the Minister for officiating at the Remembrance Sunday service. Nice to see so many turn out for this.
Craft Fair
It has been decided to mount an exhibition of the talents of our village and the surrounding neighbourhood. This would take place at Easter (definite date to be confirmed) and we would be looking for paintings, drawings, modelling, needlework, photography and any other creative items. We know that these are produced locally and our only problem is persuading folk not to hide their light........ We would work on a sale or just for show basis and take a modest percentage of any money raised which could go towards plants for our large village containers.
We will be contacting everyone again In the New Year to get an idea of what and how many pieces of work we will be able to accommodate - so get busy!! Meantime, if you would be interested please contact Wendy Ratter on 830286 or wendyratter@btinternet.com.
WEATHER UPDATE FROM GEORGE PATTERSON
With one day to go, we've had 106 mm of rain in November (just over 4 inches), so the three months of autumn have in total been rather wet. But November has been nastier than the mere rainfall figures indicate, with only one day when there wasn't any rain at all, and with significant amounts of wind on most days. (Nine air frosts so far, with a sharp frost forecast for the 30th: but that's nothing to complain about.)
Articles For Sale
Just a wee reminder that there is a section on the village website to put articles for sale. If you want anything added contact George Jeffrey at MandGJeffrey@btinternet.com.
Bonfire
If you are going to add anything to the bonfire, please make sure it will burn. Broken glass does not burn! Please don’t be shy, if you add a lot to the bonfire please feel free to light it (and keep an eye on it!). It is not an official bonfire in any way and anyone adding to it does so entirely at their own risk.
Santa’s Box
Santa will be putting up his postbox this weekend for anyone wanting to give him a hint of what they would like for Christmas. Santa, as usual, will reply to all letters sent to him.
BEWARE!
Bartlehill was broken into recently and there have been other reports of suspicious behaviour. Please be on your guard and report anything suspicious to the police on 882402.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year with
Best wishes for 2010
To everyone
