The Bridge operates two community transport initiatives, one in the Roxburgh area and another in the Tweeddale area.  Both projects are funded by The Bridge and the Scottish Rural Community Transport Initiative.  Community transport is available for self hire or for hire using our approved volunteer drivers.  Both initiatives are members of the Borders Community Transport Network (BCTN). 

Who can use community transport?

In Roxburgh:

  • Anyone with special mobility needs
  • Community groups within the areas
  • Anyone who lives in the Roxburgh district

In Tweeddale:

Tweed Wheels:

  • Anyone with special mobility needs who lives in the Tweeddale area.

Community Minibus:

  • Any non profit making community or voluntary group involved in activities of benefit to the community. 


What vehicles can be hired?

Teviot Wheels:

  • Two Citroen Chairman Dispatch cars which can carry up to two wheelchairs and 4/5 passengers each.

Tweeddale Community Transport:

  • Tweed Wheels - Renault Trafic specially adapted as a disabled passenger vehicle seating 5 passengers up to 2 in wheelchairs.
  • Community Minibus - a fully accessible 15 seater minibus

Who can drive the vehicles?

Teviot Wheels

You can nominate your own registered private driver (Your spouse, friend, relative etc), so long as they are aged between 25-75, have a clean driving licence and take a brief familiarisation test with one of the vehicles. 

Tweeddale Community Transport

The vehicles can be driven by nominated drivers or by members of our pool of volunteer drivers.  All drivers must undergo MiDAS training.  Drivers must be aged between 25-75.

What can it be used for?

Disabled Passenger Vehicles

The extra passenger seating is ideal for journeys with family and friends, and the scheme is available for:

  • Shopping trips.
  • Visit to family and friends.
  • Sightseeing trips.
  • Transport to meetings of groups.
  • Community use

What does it cost?

Most journeys are subsidised by Scottish Borders Council Car Scheme with the exception of health related journeys: journeys to doctors surgeries, GP clinics, dentists and non-NHS clinics are subsidised.  Journeys to hospital in-patients, day-patients or NHS consultant surgeries are not subsidised with the exception of appointments relating to eyes, ears or feet. 

The cost for journeys eligible under the Social Car Scheme is  15p per mile.  Other journeys are 45p per mile.

Community Minibus (Tweeddale only)  

  • Outings
  • Attending regular meetings
  • Music, theatre, cinema and other cultural events
  • Sporting events
  • Other events or activities

What does the Minibus cost?

The charge to hire the minibus plus a driver is 70p per mile and 60p per mile when the group elects its own driver (who must have undergone MiDAS training).
