Borders Production Unit provides a hands-on approach to personal and employability skills development for some of the most vulnerable and socially excluded young people in the community.
Over the last 10 years, the BPU, which is part of Community Learning & Development within Scottish Borders Council, has worked with young people aged 16 -20 years who have fallen out of education, employment or training. In this period of time, the BPU has built up considerable experience and expertise in meeting the needs of these young people, many of whom face a range of challenges including few or no qualifications, literacy and numeracy difficulties, low self esteem and confidence, health or mental health issues and homelessness.
The BPU has recently completed a review process, which provided the opportunity to clarify and re-energise its place in the landscape of services in the Scottish Borders. The review process identified a range of strengths and it was clear that the success of BPU has been through a focus on developing a range of vocational training opportunities as well as adopting a youth work approach to the work with young people. As one of the trainees noted “They helped you learn about life and they give you the skills you need to live. They helped make me what I am today”.
