| Recent work: Langlee Community Carnival 15th September 2007 After a break of three decades the Langlee Carnival has been re-established with a Community Safety and family-centred theme. The original carnival was held in 1971 and was aimed at developing a sense of community among the residents of Langlee. Unfortunately, that carnival lasted only a further three year when it ended due to a dearth of willing volunteers. The committee was constituted this year and chaired by Gerry Moss. The 2006 template was adopted and adjusted to take into accountlocal requirements with Guy Shikkinglaw providing a supporting role to the chairman. The event was sposored by the community warden service, the National Lottery "Awards For All", the Focus Centre and Langlee Centre management committees. Carnival Committee was set up involving Scottish Borders Council Community Wardens, Residents Associations, Police, Langlee Primary School, Langlee Community Centre Management Committee & Community Learning & Development (CL&D) staff to organise this event packed day. The “Burnfoot template” was adopted and adjusted to take into account local requirements with Guy Shillinglaw taking on the co-ordinator’s role.
A fun packed programme for all ages was lined up with clowns, a magician and a variety of bouncy castles. Langlee youth club workers organised the fancy dress parade led by Gala pipe and brass bands. Langlee Primary School, in addition to selecting the Lad and Lass and providing the venue, organised the children’s sports heats and finals. Entertainment included a terrific Trash Band display and workshop. There were also demonstrations by Irish dancers, line dancing and jive groups throughout the day. Another highlight was Langlee Music Project (Distortion), Craig Jeffrey and the legendary Mike Whellans playing live in the marquee. The day was a resounding success with attendance numbers fluctuating between 350 – 500 throughout the day. A real Carnival atmosphere was created by all who participated. The event was photographically recorded by Galashiels Camera Club It was a very special day for Lad & Lass Kyle Johnston and Rebecca Gammiewho will remember this occasion for many years to come.
