What you can learn from a lipreading class Learning to lipread cannot be done in a day but you can make rapid progress by attending classes regularly. Your eyes are being trained to do the work of your ears so you will learn to become more observant. This means becoming more aware of facial expressions, body movement and gestures.
We will help you to - learn how to read lip patterns in a fun way with other people who share your difficulties - this includes learning about sounds that look the same such as 'sh' and 'ch' so that words like 'share' and 'chair' do not get mixed up
- practice lipreading by taking part in exercises that are presented without the use of voice (this is added at the end of the exercise so you can check your progress)
- take part in group sessions involving exercises, fun quizzes and the sharing of interesting stories.
Other benefits You will also be given: - the opportunity to be with other Deaf and hard of hearing people who understand the experience of living with hearing loss
- advice on how to cope with problem situations in everyday life
- help with simple hearing aid problems and advice about other useful equipment
- regular talks by organisations who can share ideas and information on a range of issues related to hearing loss.
