| NHS Borders offer established Smoking Cessation Services for people who live in the Borders area and want to give up smoking. Smoking Cessation support is offered in a variety of places including: - Community Groups
- Doctors Surgeries
- Community Pharmacies
- Workplaces
Our services are free and are delivered by trained workers. Prescriptions for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can be obtained from all of our trained workers. Prescriptions are normally provided for 2 weeks at a time. If you are not eligible for free prescriptions you will pay only the normal prescription fee. Community groups - Specialist workers based in the Health Promotion Department offer regular 6 week group courses in various locations in the Borders including Selkirk, Peebles, Galashiels and Jedburgh. Following an initial assessment appointment, people are invited to attend a course which covers topics such as preparing to quit, coping with withdrawals and preparing for difficult situations. Our specialist Smoking Cessation Support Workers are also able to offer one-to-one support for people who are unable to access some of the other sources of support (e.g. if you are housebound or experiencing other ill-health) Doctors' Surgeries - most doctors' surgeries offer one-to-one support usually from their practice nurse. A few also offer group courses. Following an initial assessment appointment, you will be invited to attend every week or every fortnight to see the nurse for support with stopping. Pharmacy services - Most community pharmacies offer one-to-one support. Following an initial assessment appointment with the pharmacist, you will be invited to attend every fortnight (usually to see the pharmacy technician) for stop smoking support. Workplace support - Support can be provided in the workplace via the Smoking Cessation Service or Occupational Health. Please contact us for more details.
