Thinking of Volunteering? Everyone has experience, skills and interests they can share to improve the quality of life for individuals or the community as a whole. Volunteering provides an opportunity to share in an activity, which is mutually beneficial to both the volunteer and the recipient. Volunteers come from all walks of life and are all ages, from retired people to school pupils. All that is required is some spare time, commitment, common sense, reliability and a desire to help.
Volunteering covers several areas, which include
- Project Scotland and Young People – where volunteering must be seen by young people from all of Scotland’s Communities as an attractive, accessible option, which can help them reach their full potential
- Dismantling the barriers to volunteering and closing the opportunity gap – where volunteering must be accessible to all people of Scotland
- Improving the volunteering experience – through sharing managers’ expertise, correct procedures are followed to make sure that volunteering is trouble-free and fulfilling
- Monitoring, Evaluation and ongoing policy development – by continuing to develop policy, volunteers will benefit from quality, inclusive volunteering, whatever they choose to do.

What can I do? There are many different organisations in the Scottish Borders, who can offer you a volunteering placement – here are a few examples:
| Befriending | Counselling | | Advice and Advocacy | Committee involvement | | Social Activities | Special Needs Groups | | Driving | Gardening and DIY | | Home-based volunteering | Pet-fostering | | Fundraising | Play schemes |
How much time?
You decide! From an hour a week to a few days a week or just occasionally as needed. There is voluntary work to suit whatever time you have spare.
What's in it for me
- The enjoyment of sharing your interests and skills.
- The satisfaction of helping others and knowing that your efforts are appreciated.
- Develop confidence and new skills – training is offered in some voluntary work.
- Meet new people.
- Become involved in community work.
- Gain new experience.
Don’t assume there’s nothing for you – there is a type of volunteering to suit everyone!
